With the preseason in the books, the NFL is nearing the final roster cuts to the 53-man roster for the regular season.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Arizona Cardinals have decided to part ways with veteran running back Chris Johnson.

The 31-year-old was in the midst of a strong 2015 campaign through the first 11 games with 814 rushing yards before suffering a fractured tibia in Week 12. This opened the door to David Johnson getting the opportunity to latch securely onto the starting job that he has held ever since.

Chris Johnson had inked three straight one-year deals with the Cardinals, with the latest coming just ahead of the start of training camp last month. The three-time Pro Bowler has rushed for 9,537 yards in nine full seasons, including 2,006 yards in the 2009 campaign with the Tennessee Titans. He also set the NFL single-season mark with 2,509 yards from scrimmage that helped him earn the Offensive Player of the Year.
