The Arizona Cardinals have signed star running back David Johnson to a three-year extension worth $39 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Schefter further notes that Johnson’s deal has $30 million in guaranteed money — which is the third-highest figure among active running backs — and could be worth as much as $45 million.

Johnson held out of the team’s mandatory minicamp in June just as his camp and the Cardinals began talks on a new deal. However, he eventually decided to end his holdout and report to training camp.

A third-round pick by the Cardinals in 2015, Johnson's extension came the night before he was about to enter the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, where he was scheduled to earn $1.9 million this season.

Johnson had a breakout year in 2016 when he was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler for the first time. That season, Johnson rushed for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns on 293 carries and added 879 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 80 catches. His 2,118 all-purpose years and 373 touches both led the NFL that season.

Johnson is now set to make his comeback this season after missing virtually all of the 2017 campaign due to a broken wrist he suffered in Week 1. He is expected to be an integral part of the Cardinals offense this year, both in terms of the running game and the passing attack.

And with his extension, Johnson will form the foundation of the Cardinals offense with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, the Cardinals’ 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, for the next few years.
