The Adrian Peterson era in New Orleans is over just five weeks into the season.

The Saints have traded the veteran running back to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional draft pick, per ESPN’s Dianna Russini.

Peterson was simply unable to find a role in the Saints' offense after arriving in New Orleans via free agency this past offseason. In his very first game with the team, signs of friction were already showing. He was seen shouting at head coach Sean Payton on the sidelines, presumably due to a lack of touches.

That outburst did little to change his situation, though. Peterson had just 81 rushing yards on 27 carries in the four games he played for the Saints. He received significantly fewer touches compared to fellow running backs Mark Ingram and rookie Alvin Kamara, who were more capable pass catchers than Peterson.

Peterson was a complete nonfactor in New Orleans’ 20-0 win over the Miami Dolphins in London, which proved to be his final game for the team. He finished with just four yards on four carries.

The former NFL MVP will now look to jumpstart an Arizona Cardinals offense that has had a lot of trouble running the ball the season after star running back David Johnson went down with a dislocated wrist. The Cardinals are averaging just 2.6 yards per carry, which is dead last in the NFL by some margin.

Peterson should be the lead back moving forward for the Cardinals, who released veteran running back Chris Johnson to make room for Peterson on the roster, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
