Leaks recently emerged detailing the possibility of the University of Oklahoma targeting Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The rumors have since been shut down. However, the leaks served as a warning to the Cardinals regarding the need to secure Kingsbury's future with the team.

In only his third season with the team, Kingsbury and the Cardinals are having a breakthrough in terms of progress. The team is currently first in the NFC West having lost just twice so far this season. With 9 wins under their belt, the team's offense has caused opponents lots of problems.

Since making the jump from coaching in the college ranks to coaching the Cardinals in the NFL, Kingsbury has taken the Arizona team to new heights. His amazing work has seen him sounded out as a potential NFL Coach of the Year. Now, the Cardinals want to do everything they can to keep him from leaving for Oklahoma (via CBS):

“With one year left on his deal, league sources indicated a long-term extension is a significant offseason priority for the Cardinals, and the coach's leverage has clearly never been higher.”

Indeed, Kingsbury can make the case for an improved deal from the Cardinals. When he first took over, the team was 5-10-1. Last year, they were 8-8, and this year they are 9-2 through the first 11 games—currently the best record in the NFL. In addition to this clear progression, Kingsbury is in a good position with Kyler Murray in the team. Murray, 24, is the team's franchise quarterback and seems destined to compete for individual and team awards in the future. Like his head coach, Kyler Murray is in line for an improved contract extension.

Kliff Kingsbury and his Cardinals side face the Chicago Bears next in Week 13 of the NFL.
