It didn’t find safety D.J. Swearinger a long time to get an NFL team show interest in him after getting waived by the Washington Redskins. On Christmas Day Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Arizona Cardinals have claimed the veteran defensive piece off waivers.

Former Redskins’ safety D.J. Swearinger, whom Washington released Monday after he publicly criticized its defensive coordinator, officially was claimed on waivers today by the Arizona Cardinals.

Prior to his release from Washington, Swearinger voiced out his displeasure of the Redskins’ defensive playcalling during the team’s 25-16 road loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 16. It is what many believe had paved the way for Swearinger’s exit from Washington which shocked fans and experts alike, considering that he was among the few and most consistent performer on a team that’s going nowhere this year.

Fortunately for Swearinger, the Cardinals are willing to absorb him back into their roster for at least the remainder of the 2018 NFL season. Swearinger, who wore Arizona colors in 2016, has played in 14 games and recorded four interceptions so far this season.

In Arizona, he’ll be joining a stop unit that’s in need plenty of help, as evidenced by its averages of 26.5 points and 363.3 total yards surrendered per contest, 27th and 19th in the NFL, respectively, heading into the last week of the regular season.

Swearinger was selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.
