It has been a long recovery process from wrist surgery for Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl running back David Johnson. He has steadily progressed toward being physically ready to go well ahead of the 2018 season.

Recent reports suggested that the Cardinals expected him to get a full medical clearance in the coming weeks. According to Omar Ruiz of ESPN, Johnson has finally received the green light to go through some weight-bearing exercises involving his surgically-repaired wrist.

This is a huge step forward for Johnson toward getting back on the field this offseason, as it should allow him to participate in all team-related activities. What also has been encouraging about this process is that he hasn't dealt with any setbacks along the way, which should bode well for him going through a steady offseason workout regimen.

The 26-year-old's return to the lineup should provide a significant boost to the Cardinals' offense, as he has quickly catapulted himself into being their primary factor on that side of the ball. When healthy, he has proven to be one of the league's best all-around running backs behind his explosive running ability and unique proficiency as a legitimate receiving option out of the backfield.

Johnson is just a season removed from his breakout year where he recorded more than 2,000 total yards from scrimmage while finishing seventh with 1,239 rushing yards and second with 16 rushing touchdowns. He also notched 80 catches for 879 receiving yards and four touchdowns, leading the league in receiving yards for running backs. All of this helped him earn his lone Pro Bowl selection and First-Team All-Pro nod.

If he can return to that Pro Bowl form, it should bode well for the Cardinals' chances to possibly contend for a playoff spot and be competitive in what should be a daunting NFC West division next season.
