Heading into the 2018 season, Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson has been quite anxious to get back on the field after an injury-shorten year.

What has become a topic of discussion around him has been his contract situation, which he is currently playing in the fourth year of his $2.9 million rookie deal that will pay him $1.8 million for the 2018 campaign. With that in mind, Johnson recently acknowledged that his current contract standing among other things has been a motivating factor for him to prove that he is an elite talent at the position this year, according to Darren Urban of Azcardinals.com.

“It’s a little bit of motivation, but there is so much other stuff – the injury and what I want to prove,” Johnson said. “I’m definitely going to have (the contract) in the back of my head while I play, but like I said there’s a lot of other stuff going on.”

Johnson has the motivation to put together a stellar campaign to put himself back on the map as one of the premier offensive talents. He has already voiced that he wants to notch 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards this upcoming season, which could see him put together a huge bounce-back year. At the same time, he has also stated that he strongly desires to ink a long-term extension that will keep in Arizona for the next several years.

However, there has been no rush toward getting an extension hammered out this offseason. Johnson may have missed almost all of the 2017 season due to a wrist injury; he put on display plenty of promise in his breakout 2016 where he set franchise records for yards from scrimmage (2,118) and touchdowns (20) while earning a Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro nod.

The table is all set for him to put together a highly productive campaign to why he deserves to earn a lucrative long-term extension in the near future.
