The Arizona Cardinals suffered an injury-plagued 2017 NFL season en route to missing the NFL playoffs yet again. They fell vastly short of expectations entering the year.

With the retirements of head coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Carson Palmer, the Cardinals are now left with more questions than answers this offseason. Even star running back David Johnson admitted to trying to convince the veteran signal caller to return for another year during an appearance on the Pro Football Talk PM Podcast:

“I think Carson’s done,” Johnson said. “I’ve talked to him. I was trying to get him to come back just because he was another person who was very impactful not just on the field but also off the field. I was trying to recruit him to come back but I think his mindset is [to retire] — and I definitely understand where he’s coming from.”

Johnson added that he is doing his best to make sure star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald also returns for the 2018 NFL season.

“Larry’s got to come back,” Johnson said. “He’s still playing at a high level. I think he’s at 100 receptions and he had 1,000 receiving yards. He went to another Pro Bowl. He’s got to come back. He’s got to finish out and help us get to this Super Bowl that he’s trying to get.”

Palmer had been in the midst of a solid outing year before undergoing season-ending surgery for the broken arm he suffered against the Los Angeles Rams in late October. It seems the rest of the year did little to inspire the veteran to try and make a comeback.

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has let it be known that he will be taking a wait-and-see approach this offseason. That said, Johnson and the Cardinals will need to make some significant upgrades their two most critical positions if they are to convince their star wideout to give it another shot.
