The Arizona Cardinals recently had nothing but praises for quarterback Blaine Gabbert. The team even dropped hints that he could be the team's starting signal-caller next season. Gabbert, however, won’t even be the Arizona's starter this Sunday, when the Cardinals host the New York Giants at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Instead, it’s Drew Stanton, who will be taking the snaps as the Cardinals’ starter according to the team, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Drew Stanton, who started two games this season, has been reinstated as Arizona’s starting quarterback, coach Bruce Arians announced today.

Arians’ decision came on the heels of a sub-par Week 15 performance from Gabbert last Sunday in which the quarterback completed just 16 of 41 passes for only 189 passing yards with no touchdowns and an interception. In five starts for the Cards this season, Gabbert has accumulated 1,086 passing yards to go with six touchdowns and six interceptions on a 55.6 completion percentage.

Stanton was the first quarterback to inherit the starting gig after Carson Palmer broke his arm in a Week 7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Overall this season, Stanton has played in three games (two starts) and put up 540 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions on a 48.4 completion percentage.

It’s unknown how Gabbert’s benching would alter his position in the franchise’s future plans. Gabbert’s one-year contract with the Cardinals expires at the end of this season. Like Gabbert, Stanton is also bound for free agency in 2018.
