So much for Josh Rosen's supposed lack of competitive fire. Despite the Arizona Cardinals selecting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick the 2019 NFL Draft, Rosen was apparently keen on staying with his incumbent team because he was confident he could beat out Murray to be Arizona's franchise quarterback.

According to Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated, the former tenth overall pick suggested on Thursday night, during the NFL draft, that he would out-duel Murray on Thursday night after learning from his agent that Arizona might ultimately elect against trading him.

“While agency staffers in the next room celebrated the selection of other clients with wine and pulls of Tito’s vodka, Williams called Rosen from his office with an update: The Cardinals might actually keep you. ‘If that’s their position,' Rosen told him, ‘then I’ll just beat him out and Kyler can be the backup.' Williams’ reply: ‘They don’t want that, and they know they don’t want that. We’re getting a trade done.'”

Rosen was dealt to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 62 overall pick and a 2020 fifth-rounder the next day. Though reports began surfacing early on Thursday that Arizona, unsatisfied with existing trade offers, could hang onto Rosen for the time being, most assumed the Cardinals were posturing in hopes of coaxing superior trade packages from interested teams rather than actually considering having both Rosen and Murray on the roster going forward.

As a rookie, Rosen threw for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions while completing just 55.2 percent of his passes.
