The St. Louis Cardinals looked all but done at the beginning of September. Fast forward to October, and Mike Shildt's club just had a 17-game winning streak come to an end and they've now punched a ticket to the NL Wild Card game.

Despite it seeming obvious, Shildt still confirmed, per ESPN, that veteran Adam Wainwright will be starting for the Cardinals in the Wild Card game.

“He gets better as the game goes, he goes deep in games, he's a big-game pitcher,” Shildt said.

“Everybody will be ready to go for Wednesday,” Shildt said. “We have two full days off, so it will be all hands on deck.”

Who the Cardinals will be playing is yet to be determined but as of now it would be the Los Angeles Dodgers in a one-game, winner-take-all scenario.

Currently, the San Francisco Giants lead the Dodgers in the race for the NL West by two games with three to go. If the Giants were to falter and LA takes over the division in the end, the Cardinals would meet up with San Francisco.

It's been an incredible turn around for St. Louis and even more incredible watching Wainwright pitch this year at age 40.

The lanky right-hander is 17-7 this year with a 3.08 ERA. The rotation for the Cardinals has been decimated by injuries but one constant along the way has been Wainwright. And they'll be putting their trust in the veteran against either the Dodgers or Giants when the MLB Postseason begins.
