Marcus Mariota had a rough 2019 season with the Tennessee Titans, as the former second-overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft dropped in the depth chart at quarterback in favor of eventual Comeback Player of the Year Ryan Tannehill. Could the ex-Heisman Trophy winner find a new home with the Arizona Cardinals?
Per Jason La Canfora in CBS Sports:
Mariota, 26, saw Tannehill last season take over the starting offense, going 7-3 in the final 10 games in the former Miami Dolphins gunslinger's starts and later defeating the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens in the postseason. Tannehill is a free agent, however, and will likely sign a big deal or be tagged by Tennessee this offseason.
For Mariota, though, it means finding another franchise. The Cardinals could use a back up to 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year Kyler Murray, another former Heisman Trophy winner and the first overall pick from last year's draft.
Murray wowed believers and skeptics alike in his first year with the Cardinals, but that doesn't mean the NFC West franchise can't improve the position's depth by signing on Mariota.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback Mariota threw for 1,203 yards on 95 completions in seven games with a career-low 59.4 completion percentage in 2019, connecting on seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for an additional 129 yards this past season—a year removed from his career-best 357 rushing yards during the 2018 campaign (and a year before that he rushed for five touchdowns in 15 games).
