Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson believes head coach Steve Wilks will still be with the team next season despite recent speculation about his future following a turbulent debut season.

“I honestly think coach will be here next year,” Peterson said, per Bob McManaman of The Arizona Republic. “It's been a tough season for us, but we all love coach. He's a heck of a motivator, just the way he's able to get guys going for games and the messages that he sends across. … Just everything about coach, he's a man's man.”

Peterson isn’t the first Cardinals star player to express his confidence in Wilks recently. Star wideout Larry Fitzgerald previously said the entire team wants Wilks back next season.

The Cardinals have had a rough first year under Wilks. They are currently 3-12 and look headed for the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Wilks fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy early in the season and replaced him with Byron Leftwich after the Cardinals offense’s string of disappointing performances.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Cardinals are planning to part ways with Wilks at the end of the season. Mike McCarthy has also been linked with the Cardinals coaching job of late.

Peterson has heard of those rumors surrounding his head coach, but he is holding out hope that Wilks will be back.

“I definitely hope those speculations are false, but at the end of the day, that's something that's out my control,” Peterson said. “But as players, we're planning to have coach back next year.”

It remains to be seen whether the sentiments of Fitzgerald, Peterson, and the rest of the Cardinals will be enough to save Wilks’ job. But if he does somehow hold onto his job, Wilks will have his veterans to thank for sticking up for himCardinals news: Patrick Peterson thinks Steve Wilks ‘will be here next year'
