NFL teams are preparing for the regular season by trimming their rosters down to the required 53 players, and the Arizona Cardinals have made a tough choice by releasing wide receiver Pharoh Cooper.

This is a bit of a shocking turn, but it seems as if Cooper simply didn’t fit into the new offense that the Cardinals and Kliff Kingsbury are aiming to build. Cooper, a former All-Pro kick returner for the Los Angeles Rams, shouldn’t be without a job for too long, as his services on special teams will draw at least one team to try and pick him up.

Cooper, 24, was drafted in the fourth round (117th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft, and while he didn’t exactly become a weapon in the Rams offense, he excelled on the field as a special teams man. Cooper made the 2018 Pro Bowl as a return specialist, and also earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors that same year. In December 2018, however, the Rams released Cooper, and he was claimed by the Cardinals.

Now, Cooper will be looking to land with another team that could use his services. While Cooper might not be able to provide much as a wide receiver, he is explosive and creative enough as a runner to do well on special teams, and a team with a poor track record of returning kicks could take a look at him. As for the Cardinals, they'll continue trimming their roster down to 53 ahead of their regular season start next week.
