The Arizona Cardinals have been without veteran running back Adrian Peterson for some time now. Peterson had sustained a neck injury several weeks ago, however, he was not expected to miss an extended period of time.

Unfortunately, things have since taken a turn for the worst. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Peterson has officially been placed on IR and will miss the rest of the 2017 NFL season:

The 11-year veteran got off to an inauspicious start to the 2017 NFL season. After joining the New Orleans Saints over the offseason, Peterson quickly floundered in their crowded backfield.

As a result, he was traded soon thereafter to the Cardinals, where he fell back into his usual workhorse role. Peterson enjoyed quite the resurgence with Arizona from the get-go, rushing for over 130 yards in two of his first three games.

However, despite the large workload, Peterson struggled to put up any kind of numbers from that point on before ultimately suffering the season-ending neck injury. He has now finished the year with 126 carries for 529 yards and two touchdowns.

Needless to say, Peterson's latest designation raises questions as to whether or not fans may have seen the best running back of his generation take the final snaps of his career. However, given his history of overcoming injuries and adamancy about a heavy workload this year, a return for Peterson is not completely out of the question.

Either way, it will be interesting to see if this is the end of Peterson as a member of the Cardinals, or his football career completely, or if he does indeed return in some form next year.
