It looks like Steve Wilks' tenure as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals is not going to last very long.

After a miserable 3-13 campaign, Wilks has told his staff that he expects to be fired, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Cardinals never looked competitive at any point this season, getting off to an 0-4 start and never recovering. As a matter of fact, their season-ending loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday was probably one of their most impressive performances of the year.

Wilks was hired by Arizona after the team parted ways with Bruce Arians last season. Wilks had previously served as the Carolina Panthers' defensive coordinator and had been a member of the Panthers' coaching staff since 2012.

The Cardinals have been rumored to be interested in former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, perhaps even being prepared to offer McCarthy autonomy within the organization, but he is apparently not interested in the job.

Such is life for the Cards right now, as they have missed the playoffs three straight years after making the postseason in back-to-back seasons in 2015, culminating in a 13-win campaign and a trip to the NFC Championship Game.

Arizona has made the postseason just four times since 1999, including a Super Bowl appearance during the 2008-09 campaign. Even worse, since 1983, the Cardinals have only made five playoff appearances.

As bad as the Cards have been since the 1980s, this marks their worst season since 2000, when they also won three games and parted with head coach Vince Tobin during the season.
