The Arizona Cardinals currently own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. It safe to say that defensive coordinator Steve Wilks would love to use it on a player that will help make his new job easier.

This year's draft features a bevy of potential game-changers on defense. According to Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic, Joseph knows it will ultimately be a team decision:

“It’s not my pick,” Joseph said, smiling. “It’s a process. It’s a Cardinal pick. So whatever (General Manager) Steve (Keim) and (team President) Mr. (Michael) Bidwill and Kliff come up with, I’ll work with. Obviously, being a defensive guy, you want to help your defense. But again, it’s a Cardinal pick. It’s not my pick.”

Although Joseph may be willing to concede the pick to his new team, it is safe to assume he will do what he can to convince them that going to defense would be the best option. Fortunately, his chances bode well for this year's draft.

The NFL's recent trend shows that today's top overall picks usually end up being either a quarterback or pass-rusher. The Cardinals have already invested heavily under center in last year's draft with the selection of quarterback Josh Rosen. As a result, it appears defense may be at the forefront.

Aside from his personal bias, there is good reason for Arizona to look into adding more talent to Joseph's defense. Their once-formidable unit took a tremendous step back in the 2018 NFL season, and it certainly showed on a week-to-week basis. Of course, their struggles on defense could also be attributed to a lack of offense. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what the Cardinals ultimately do with the top pick.
