Carmelo Anthony appears to have been able to accept his fate with the New York Knicks and seems to already be at peace with it. However, exactly what this is and what the future holds for him in the Big Apple remain mysteries for everybody else.

After the Knicks’ defeat to the red-hot Miami Heat on Wednesday night, Melo was quite cryptic in his post-game message, but made it clear that he now understands the direction the franchise appears to be taking.

“I see the writing on the wall,’’ said the 32-year-old, per Marc Berman of New York Post. “I see what they’re trying to do. It’s me accepting that. I think that’s what puts me at peace: Me knowing and understanding how things work. ’’

What remains in obscurity here is what the Knicks actually want to do with Anthony. Do they want to keep him as part of their team and give him a diminished role in order to present an opportunity for other guys like Kristaps Porzingis to shine?

To this, the 10-time All-Star admitted that it would be a difficult transition for him, but he appreciates how his reduced role will be beneficial for the team as a whole.

“It’s difficult. It’s hard to change a player’s game in the ninth inning,” added Anthony. “I am who I am. I got here all these years playing the way I’ve been playing. It’s hard to take that step back. It’s challenging. I think it’s for the greater good of everybody on this team.”

Another option for Phil Jackson and the Knicks front office is to follow through on the endless trade rumors and finally ship out the 6-foot-8 forward come offseason. The veteran will need to waive his no-trade clause, but given how things have gone this season, the possibility of this happening has become more and more realistic.

Whichever path is chosen it looks like Melo is already prepared to take the next step in his career.
