The Cleveland Cavaliers have outspokenly begun placing the current 2018-19 NBA season in their rearview mirror and moved toward the next step in their franchise. This expressed shift of focus, which is nothing shy of a formality at this point, is indicated by the Cavs' front office beginning their search for their next head coach. However, according to Joe Vardon and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, the current head coach of Cleveland, Larry Drew, will likely not receive consideration as a serious candidate.

Drew, who has been with Cleveland since joining on as an assistant coach in 2014-15, has filled the role left behind following the Cavaliers’ firing of former head coach Tyronn Lue just a quick six games into the season. There was hesitation on the part of Larry Drew when he was initially asked to replace Lue and become the team’s interim coach. It wasn’t until the front office and Drew reached a renegotiation of his contract that he committed to fully taking over this season.

The current reports validate Drew’s initial reservations about taking on the responsibility. The Cleveland Cavaliers have gone 9-40 so far this season and have put out one of the worst regular season campaigns seen in recent history. In speaking with The Athletic, Drew even mentioned he is unsure if he would ever pursue a head coaching position in the league again following this season.

The Cleveland front office is expected to begin their search with young coaches who have proven their ability to develop players in their search for a long-term option at head coach. Multiple G League and NBA assistant coaches, all with ties to current Cavs GM Kobe Altman, were mentioned by Vardon and Lloyd in regard to potential names being eyed by the Cavaliers.
