Despite already having a number of months to recover from a right hip injury that abruptly ended his season back in March, there’s still no certainty if Isaiah Thomas will be ready for the opening of the Boston Celtics training camp. However, there’s also a chance he’ll be available to prepare with his team by then, but it will all depend on a follow-up check up early next month.

The development was confirmed by head coach Brad Stevens during his appearance on The Vertical Podcast with Chris Mannix. He then added that the 5-foot-9 point guard has been making a lot of positive steps towards his full recovery, but still prefers to wait for the results of the tests to find out his current condition.

“He has another follow-up and another scan in the early part of September. Obviously, it’s been a lot of appropriate rest, a lot of rehab. There have been some good strides here certainly in the last month or few weeks, but we’re not going to know that until after that early September timeframe.”

Isaiah Thomas is coming off a career year where he was named an All-Star for the second straight season. He averaged 28.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game, leading the C’s all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals.

With hip injuries being tricky to deal with, the Celtics are expected to take a cautious approach on his health, as they will rely on him heavily towards the end of the regular season and the playoffs. Thomas may also want to take that route, as he is entering a contract year, and will definitely look to cash in on a max deal next summer.
