Following the news that recently surfaced about the Boston Celtics looking for takers on Marcus Smart, the team has now reportedly reached out to the New York Knicks to look into making a possible deal with them soon.

The Celtics need to move a few of their key pieces in order to make room for the signing of Gordon Hayward, who announced his decision of bringing his talents to Beantown. The Knicks have a hole in their guard rotation, especially with the uncertainty on Derrick Rose’s future with the team, but their level of interest in Smart remains unclear, according to ESPN’s Ian Begley.

Smart is coming off his best season as a pro where he averaged career-highs of 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals to go along with 3.9 rebounds  in 30.4 minutes per game. Despite his impressive numbers, his hustle and defensive acumen is what makes him a very intriguing prospect for other teams.

The 23-year-old Oklahoma State product is only owed $4.5 million next season, which is considered a bargain these days. Given the skill set that he has, teams can definitely benefit from him and only risk a small amount. The Celtics may want to strike a deal soon for Smart, but it’s still anyone’s guess at this point what the Knicks are willing to give up in exchange for his services, should they indeed want him in their fold.
