The Boston Celtics did not make any trades prior to the 3 p.m. ET deadline on Thursday, but that does not mean they won't be adding any players this season.

According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Celtics will be “major in the market” for Cleveland Cavaliers big man Tristan Thompson if he gets bought out.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that Thompson had no intention of accepting a buyout, but Windhorst now says that the chances of the veteran being bought out have “increased dramatically.”

Thompson is making $18.5 million this season, which made a trade for him nearly impossible.

The Cavaliers also acquired center Andre Drummond in a deal with the Detroit Pistons ahead of the deadline, cluttering a Cleveland frontcourt that also includes Kevin Love.

Due to the fact that Thompson's playing time will surely dip with the arrival of Drummond, he may be more amendable to a buyout, as it would give him the chance to play for a contender.

Thompson is in the final year of his current deal. In 48 games this season, he is averaging 11.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 31 minutes per game while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor and 63.8 percent from the free-throw line.

While his offensive game is mainly limited to lobs and putbacks, Thompson is a ferocious rebounder and has the ability to defend in space. In addition, he has vast playoff experience, as he helped the Cavs reached four straight NBA Finals between 2015 and 2018 and played a significant role in their championship victory over the Golden State Warriors in 2016.
