When the Houston Rockets announced that everyone on their team not named James Harden was available via trade, multiple teams have shown interest in some of their players. One of them is the Boston Celtics, who according to Adam Himmelsbach of Boston Globe, once thought about the possibility of trading for Clint Capela.
There have been reports that the Celtics have had trade talks with the Rockets about their talented young center, Clint Capela, who has four years left on his five-year, $90 million deal. A league source said Saturday that the Celtics are intrigued by Capela, but that the sides have not had any trade talks and that a deal for Capela is unlikely because Boston would not have interest in surrendering the players needed to complete the trade.
Capela averaged 16.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks last season, proving himself as one of the best two-way players in the league. However, even if the Celtics had enough assets to convince the Rockets to trade him, they wouldn't have pushed through with it. If they were unwilling to part ways with their young players and picks for an MVP-type player such as Anthony Davis, they sure won't do that for a guy like Capela.
Moreover, the Rockets have made it clear that they will only be trading their players if they see equal value in other teams' offers. This means that if the Celtics want to acquire Capela, they would most probably have to give up Jayson Tatum; again, that is not in their best interest.
The Celtics are preparing themselves for the potential departure of Kyrie Irving and the aftermath of the failed Anthony Davis pursuit. They will likely explore the option of making draft day deals, then see what they will get before heading into free agency.
