Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens says star point guard Kyrie Irving could miss time beyond Wednesday's home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves after taking a shot to the face on Monday night versus the San Antonio Spurs.

Both of Kyrie Irving's eyes were scratched and he received antibiotics.

In 34 games this season for the Celtics, Kyrie Irving is averaging 23.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. The five-time All-Star is shooting 48.8 percent from the field, 40.8 percent from beyond the arc and 85.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Irving has recorded eight double-doubles on the year.

Terry Rozier will start for Boston at the point guard position until Kyrie Irving is healthy enough to play. Rozier is averaging 8.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists on the season. The rugged defender started for Irving in the 2018 playoffs after Kyrie underwent season-ending knee surgery.

The Celtics enter Wednesday with a record of 21-15, good for fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. They are coming off a 120-111 loss to the Spurs. Kyrie Irving played 28 minutes in that game and finished with 16 points and eight assists.

Eye injuries are not ones to take lightly. Irving is a player who is constantly driving to the rim and playing in heavy traffic. Until his eyes are 100 percent, Irving shouldn't step back onto the court.
