Boston Celtics All-Star swingman Jayson Tatum has been through plenty of ups and downs this season. But he made some history on Sunday night and earned a shoutout from his proud parents in the process.

Tatum became the youngest player in franchise history to reach 5,000 career points after scoring 22 in a win over the Charlotte Hornets.

That's a pretty impressive record to hold considering the legends that have donned the Celtics uniform. Tatum's parents certainly saw it as a cause for celebration.

Tatum has continued to showcase his ability as one of the top individual scorers and playmakers in the game this season.

The 23-year-old is averaging a career-high 25.2 points on 45.3 percent shooting from the field. His year-over-year three-point percentage is down slightly, but he's still shooting close to 38 percent from beyond the arc on 7.4 attempts per game. Tatum is also averaging a career-high 4.3 assists per game.

Unfortunately for the Celtics, Tatum's growth has not resulted in greater success. Boston has lacked frontcourt scoring. The team was without Marcus Smart for an extended period and ranks 20th in defensive rating.

Fatigue and inconsistency might be playing a role, as well. The Celtics were one of the teams most impacted by COVID-19 back in mid-January. Tatum himself contracted the virus and has said multiple times he doesn't quite feel like his normal self on the floor.

Boston is tied with the New York Knicks for the seventh spot in the East. But the Celtics are also just one game back of the fourth-seeded Atlanta Hawks. They will need Tatum to make plays on both ends and be a shot-creator down the stretch as they jockey for playoff seeding.
