The Boston Celtics officially signed Jaylen Brown to his contract extension.

Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge released the following statement on the move:

“Jaylen has made tremendous strides over the last three years and has become a fantastic player for us on both ends of the court,” Ainge said. “He’s a great person and hard worker who, at 22 years old, can score and defend against the best players in the NBA. Jaylen is a true professional who did a great job accepting his role last season, and he is a major part of our championship goals.”

Last season for the Celtics, Brown averaged 13.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 46.5 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from beyond the arc and 65.8 percent from the free-throw line.

The Celtics will need Brown to play at a near All-Star level this season. All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Al Horford are gone, so Boston will be asking Brown to do a lot more for them on offense in 2019-20.

Brown would have entered restricted free agency next summer if he and the Celtics didn't agree to an extension. The contract situation could have been a distraction for Brown during the season, so it's good he and Boston were able to get it done.
