Burning a player’s jersey when he leaves a team has become a thing aggrieved fans have become accustomed to doing over the past few years. And after Isaiah Thomas’ blockbuster trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers, some Boston Celtics fans have already begun with the ritual.

On one hand, it’s sort of understandable that some Celtics fans would want no part of Thomas’ jersey now that he’s on the Cavs, who are the Celtics’ biggest rivals.

But on the other hand, it’s not as if Thomas wanted to leave Boston like the player he was traded for, Kyrie Irving, who wanted out of Cleveland and now-former teammate Gordon Hayward, who opted to sign with Boston instead of staying with the Utah Jazz.

On the contrary, Isaiah Thomas seemed to love it in Boston. He even said earlier this month that he'd like to be a Celtic “for years to come.” But the Celtics opted to trade him away instead of making the decision whether or not to pay him big money next summer.

So despite playing no part in the trade which saw him leave, Thomas still gets the jersey burning treatment. It just goes to show how fickle some fans’ loyalties really are.
