The Boston Celtics are in a tough spot heading into Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals. Down 2-3 against the Golden State Warriors, the Celtics need a win to keep their championship hopes alive.

The underdog mentality for Game 6 is nothing new for Jaylen Brown. He's been doubted since he stepped foot in the NBA in 2016.

Brown recalled the night the Celtics took a chance on him. He said that Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck had to defend his decision since fans wanted a trade for an established star.

“[Wyc] had to defend, like, ‘This is who we’re going with. You guys just gonna have to live with it.’ And I was like, ‘This is crazy.’ These guys have never seen me play before or, you know, I haven’t even got the opportunity,” Brown said, all quotes courtesy of Sports Illustrated.

Brown said that their doubt only fueled his determination to make a name for himself.

“It’s kind of trended like that my whole career. People in Boston that thought I was a bust, ever since have been kind of waiting to prove themselves right, in a sense, because that’s what humans do. But I’m not a bust. I keep getting better every year.”

Brown is right, he's continued to prove himself, especially as a top contributor to an NBA Finals contending team. He averaged 21.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and three rebounds through the first five games of the series.
