The Boston Celtics acquired their franchise cornerstone in point guard Kyrie Irving, and they were certainly ecstatic about the addition. But how ecstatic was Kyrie Irving to be joining a storied franchise like the Celtics one year removed from winning an NBA Championship? According to a co-actor of his, he was beyond happy about the trade.

Actor Lil Rey Howery worked with Irving on the set of his new Uncle Drew movie during the summer around the time Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He didn’t know him very well at the time, and Howery adds that he was just as curious about the rumors as anyone else.

According to Howery, he, Irving, and the crew were filming a scene for the movie on the day of the trade to the Celtics, and Howery explains how Irving found out and what his reaction was to the initial news.

“The dopest moment was when the trade actually went through,” said Howery. “He was so happy, man. We were in the middle of a scene, we were shooting a scene, his homeboy comes in, whispers in his ear, and he just runs out of the set. We’re filming, and he just runs out the club where we were shooting the scene so happy. He comes back and everybody was applauding. It was during a dancing scene, so when you see the movie and him really getting it, that’s him in real life. He was really happy.”

In his first season with the Celtics, Irving has led his team to the second seed in the Eastern Conference without the services of All-Star Gordon Hayward, averaging 24.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.1 steals on 49 percent shooting from the field and 40.8 percent from downtown.
