Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving has been declared out for the rest of the contest against the Charlotte Hornets Friday after taking a hit in the face from teammate Aron Baynes, as reported by Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe and Chris Forberg of ESPN, who also pointed out that Irving is being examined for a concussion.

Baynes was trying to foil Hornets guard Kemba Walker’s layup attempt early in the first quarter but in the process, inadvertently planted his left elbow on Irving’s face. Kyrie Irving walked away from the court with a bloody face.

The Celtics are already dealing with the season-long absence of Gordon Hayward, who suffered a gruesome leg injury on opening night, and though they have done a fine job of keeping their head above water despite missing the forward, losing Irving for any amount of time is going to feel like a punch in the stomach for Boston.

Kyrie Irving didn’t score in the two minutes he spent on the court against the Hornets. His next chance to play is on Sunday when Boston hosts the Toronto Raptors.

For the meantime, the Celtics will have a committee approach in covering the void temporarily left by Irving. Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart, and Shane Larkin will share the point guard duties while Irving is out.
