Kyrie Irving is now a Boston Celtic, and though it’s been just days since he officially became one, that doesn’t mean he won’t recognize Celtics royalty when he sees one.

And when we say royalty, we’re not talking about the Larry Birds, the Bill Russells, or the Kevin McHales of the Celtics’ world. Clearly, we are referring to the sacred basketball figure that is Brian Scalabrine.

Following the press conference in which Irving and Gordon Hayward were officially introduced as brand new Celtics, Irving had a sit down interview with a group from CSN New England that included Scalabrine, who played five seasons for Boston, and just before the broadcast, the two exchanged banters that centered on Scalabrine’s bottomless legend, and his White Mamba mystique.

Uproxx has the lowdown of the funny conversation:

Kyrie: “Am I allowed to call you what everyone else calls you?”

Scalabrine: “White Mamba. Scal.”

Kyrie: “OK, I’m just making sure. I just wanted to make sure. I didn’t know. This is my first time, so I’m just asking you.”

Scalabrine: “What did you know me as?”

Kyrie: “Cause White Mamba scored 93 points. 77.”

Scalabrine: “Yeah, the legend keeps growing. We’re wondering if there’s a cap to the legend.”

Kyrie: “I don’t know. I don’t think so.”

Scalabrine: “It keeps going up. I’m like, ‘you realize I averaged 2 a game, right?’ I think people forgot.'”

Irving is looking forward to a fruitful future with the Celtics that he hopes will culminate to an NBA championship. Another ring for Irving would mean he would be surpassing the total career titles of Scalabrine.
