Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart was just giving a fan some tips on becoming a better defensive player, but an interesting part of his tweet pushed the conversation to stray off topic.

After a fan named Denzel asked Smart what he can do to improve defensively, Smart willingly answered minutes later with a rather passionate advice. However, his John Adams reference at the end raised eyebrows and sparked several funny reactions from fans.

“Takes little “talent” to play defense. Takes a wholelotta “want to”. Get every 50/50 ball. If you’re not qui[c]k defensively—get strong. Strength hides weaknesses. Take charges. Be a gr8[great] teammate. Compete. Never be ok w[ith] losing. No one remembers the 2nd US President. Only the 1st,” Smart wrote.

Did Marcus Smart just said no one remembers Adams, one of the most celebrated figures in US history? Did the Celtics guard also just suggest that the US presidency is a race and no one can no longer beat George Washington?

It certainly sparked a lot of talks. Not to mention that it came from a player in Boston, where the second US president is highly popular being from same state.

Of course, the jokes quickly came, dissing and trolling the Celtics leader for his rather bewildering tweet.

To be fair, some people might really struggle to answer if asked who the second US president is. Also, the Celtics guard is only trying to make a point about why losing and coming in second is not good–although he certainly could have used a better reference since presidency is not really comparable to a yearly competition.

For what it's worth, some suggested for Smart to watch the HBO miniseries “John Adams.”

Smart, for his part, might have already realized his mistake and acknowledged John Adams in a follow-up tweet. He also embraced the trolling by asking people to photoshop him in an “1800s pic” w[ith] rosy cheeks.”
