How bad were the infections Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart was dealing with in both eyes? Smart thought he was going to go blind at one point.

The Celtics have been without Smart for the last seven games. The rugged defender spoke to Jared Weiss of The Athletic about what this whole process has been like:

“Hell. Just really, really painful and really not knowing — I thought I was going to go blind for a while,” Smart said. “I think it was the worst case of viral conjunctivitis that they’ve seen. So basically I was a guinea pig to see how to handle this if it ever happens again to anybody else. But it was the worst pain that I’ve been through in a very long time. I don’t wish it on anybody.”

Smart has appeared in 20 games this season for the Celtics. He’s averaging 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 38.7 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 87.9 percent from the free-throw line.

The Celtics are 5-2 in their last seven games without Smart. Boston is coming off a 16-point win against the Toronto Raptors on Christmas Day.

The Celtics certainly can't wait to get Marcus Smart back in the lineup since he's the heart and soul of the team. He has been listed as questionable to play against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.
