After a month of conflicting reports, the Cleveland Cavaliers ultimately traded Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and 2018 Brooklyn Nets first round draft pick. With the two teams facing off against each other in the 2017-18 NBA season opener, it will be an interesting battle in the Eastern Conference.

When the trade was officially announced, many basketball fans wondered about Irving's NBA 2K18 cover. However, 2K Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations Jason Argent revealed they will be issuing a new version with their cover athlete in a Celtics uniform according to Matthew Kato of Game Informer:

We are excited to be part of one of the most memorable NBA offseasons in history with Kyrie, our 2K18 cover athlete, and Isaiah, one of the stars of our 2K roster, trading places. This isn't an unprecedented event, a cover athlete being traded – but it's certainly interesting timing with 2K18 being released in less than a month. The good news is that as the most authentic and realistic basketball game on the market, we're used to being nimble and responding to changes in the NBA. Fans should be thrilled to know that we will issue a version of 2K18 featuring Kyrie in a Boston Celtics uniform at a later date.

With 2K releasing the Celtics cover version at a later date, it suggests it may be a digital download. However, it is encouraging for basketball fans to know something is in the works.

While the Madden curse is well documented, every player since NBA 2K14 has changed teams within two seasons. From LeBron James (Miami Heat to Cavaliers) to Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder to Golden State Warriors) to Paul George (Indiana Pacers to Thunder), Irving becomes the latest athlete to change teams.
