Boston Celtics superstar Kyrie Irving infamously claimed last year that he believes that the Earth is flat. He finally retracted on those sentiments a few days ago and apologized for apparently confusing children with his statement.

After Irving finally stepped back on his claims, a former Celtics legend came forward and questioned Irving for taking back and apologizing for what he said. That Celtics great came in the form of Paul Pierce.

Pierce revealed on an episode of ESPN’s The Jump that he actually believes that the Earth is indeed flat, too. He, however, added a pretty mind-boggling reasoning to back up his thoughts, while co-host Rachel Nichols helplessly listened.

She later tweeted out her shock to the NBA champion's statement, along with the video of the segment.

“Why apologize when the Earth is flat? Everybody knows this. Everyone knows this. The Earth is flat. If I get on an airplane and I fly across the country and the Earth is spinning, it shouldn’t take me that long, right? It shouldn’t take me 12 hours to fly to China if the Earth is spinning. I should go straight up in the air and if the Earth is moving, I should just land in China in less than an hour.”

Really, Paul? Do you really believe that. It’s kind of ironic now that this future Hall of Famer is nicknamed “The Truth.”

We may never know, though, if Pierce really believes that or he’s just trying to make the headlines, which he surely has done. He may, however, get some heat from parents of children who might have heard and believed his reasoning.

By the looks of it, it seemed like the former 2008 Finals MVP is standing pat on his claims.

For now, though, we may want to consider taking back his nickname.
