Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce has made his feelings known that he does not want to share his special night with Isaiah Thomas.

Pierce, who is set to have his famous No. 34 retired on Feb. 11 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, further expounded why he doesn’t believe that night should be the time to also honor Thomas.

Per ESPN’s Chris Forsberg:

“I just feel like this: You only get your jersey retired once. It's a crowning achievement for me. You play this game, 19 years I was able to play, and I just feel like this is a day where I'm going to have my family, I'm going to have all the people that helped me get to the point where I needed to be throughout my 19-year career to be successful, and I just feel like that's just a special day for me.

Now, if you look at other retired players, I don't remember … other tributes going on on the same day. Isaiah will be back in Boston again – next year, the year after, he's going to have a long career there. But this one day should belong to Paul Pierce.”

The Celtics had originally planned to give Isaiah Thomas his tribute video in their most recent meeting on Wednesday. But Thomas requested the date be set back to Feb. 11 since he wasn’t going to play in Wednesday's game, and Celtics president Danny Ainge had agreed. Although, Paul Pierce’s strong opposition could now be a big stumbling block to those plans.

It’s somewhat understandable for Pierce to feel that way, even though it may seem a bit petty. He gave a good chunk of his career for the Celtics, and he'll only have one jersey retirement night to have all his own which he doesn't want to share.

Paul Pierce also raises a point that the Celtics could still give that tribute to Isaiah Thomas another time. The Cavs opted not to give Kyrie Irving one this season, and Irving was a much more impactful player for that franchise. But they could still give it in the future, as could the Celtics with Thomas. If Pierce doesn't budge from his stance, the Celtics may ultimately be forced to do just that.
