The Boston Celtics will be coming into this season as one of the frontrunners to take over the Eastern Conference crown after LeBron James' departure, but franchise icon Paul Pierce says they must learn how to sacrifice first, according to Mark Dunphy of Boston.com.

“You have to sacrifice if you are truly committed to trying to win a championship,” said Pierce. “They’re going to win a lot of games, but unless they sacrifice — because we know they’re going to be better than probably what their numbers show — if they can sacrifice they’ll win a championship this year. Because the talent is definitely there.”

Boston's roster worked intrinsically well despite the absences of two of their best players in Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, both of whom are expected to be healthy to start the season. Yet what made the group come as close as a game away from the NBA Finals was the sheer available minutes to go around and the lack of collective frustration due to playing time — something that could change with everybody healthy.

The Celtics have already become one of those teams with the young talent in Terry Rozier, Jayson Tatum, and Jaylen Brown — three key players who will have to battle for minutes in the rotation, potentially even forcing the team to make some tough choices next offseason with the wave of free agents bound to hit the market.
