Heads turned when the Boston Celtics chose Romeo Langford with the No. 15 overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft. Not because the Indiana product wasn't worthy of being selected in the middle of the first round, but because Boston, with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Gordon Hayward returning, seemed to have more pressing needs than another wing who's best with the ball in his hands.

Even more surprised than most, though? Langford, who had no idea he was going to be picked by the Celtics because he prevented his agent from providing him with any updates on draft night, according to Tom Westerholm of Mass Live.

Langford, a consensus top-five recruit in the high school class of 2018, had a strong freshman campaign for the Hoosiers despite playing through injury for the majority of the season. He averaged 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game en route to All Big 10 Second-Team honors. He was also named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team.

The 6-foot-6 lefty had surgery in April to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. He originally suffered the injury in November, which he says contributed to his uncharacteristic struggles from three-point range and the free-throw line as a freshman.

Don't expect Langford to play much of a role for Boston this season. Despite the summer departures of Kyrie Irving and Al Horford, the Celtics could compete for a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference in 2019-20 after adding Kemba Walker in free agency and retaining all of their young talent.
