Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart won't be playing any more games with Team USA at this year's FIBA World Cup, as he's officially been sidelined due to a left knuckle injury.

According to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic, Smart has already underwent X-ray examinations — the results of which came back negative. Though there were no signs of serious damage, soreness in his hand and calf led Team USA's coaching staff in their decision to shut him down for the remainder of the tournament.

Team USA's hopes of obtaining a medal at the 2019 FIBA games were dashed on Wednesday morning, as they were defeated by Rudy Gobert and the French National Team in the quarterfinal round, 89-79. Smart logged just over 22 minutes in the loss, scoring 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field (1-of-3 from beyond the arc), two assists and two steals. Donovan Mitchell led the American side, racking up 29 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Smart's injury doesn't seem to be severe, but there is no reason to risk further damage. This is likely why he's been shut down. And though he's out of this year's tournament, the Celtics star will have ample time to prepare for the coming NBA season.
