The New York Knicks waived big man Enes Kanter on Thursday, and it looks like the Boston Celtics are very interested in signing him, according to NBA insider Bryan Oringher.

Enes Kanter played in 44 games this season for the Knicks before he was waived on Thursday. The veteran power forward averaged a double-double with New York this season, putting up 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds along with 1.9 assists per contest.

Kanter shot 53.6 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from beyond the arc and 81.4 percent from the free-throw line. It is widely expected he will sign with a playoff team once he clears waivers, and the Celtics fit that bill.

Right now, Boston has Al Horford, Aron Baynes and Daniel Theis manning the front court. Baynes, however, is expected to be out through the All-Star break with a foot injury. The Celtics could definitely use the services of Enes Kanter, who can score and rebound at a very high level coming off the bench.

Boston is 35-19 on the season, good for third place in the Eastern Conference standings. We'll see if Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens pull the trigger on Enes Kanter and bring him over to Beantown, a move which would give the Celtics more big man depth, something you can never have enough of.
