The Boston Celtics already have a pair of star wing players in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but they might still go after Portland Trail Blazers star CJ McCollum.

Jason Quick of The Athletic reported the Celtics could express interest in the Blazers 2-guard, adding Marcus Smart could make sense as a starting point to get salaries to match up:

“I’ve also heard Boston could be interested in a player like McCollum, and I’ve always thought Marcus Smart and his defense would be a great pairing in Portland (obviously it would take more to make salaries match, but Smart would be a great start),” Quick wrote.

McCollum would seemingly make for a curious fit in Boston.

Again, the Celtics already have Tatum and Brown as two guys who each demand quite a bit of time on the ball. Maybe Boston would move Tatum to the power forward spot and go with a lot of small-ball, but that might have an impact on his offense if the Celtics also need him to rebound and work on the glass.

Not to mention, the C's already have what could be a less expensive option they appear to be pursuing. Boston reportedly felt much better about its chances of re-signing Evan Fournier–whom they acquired ahead of the deadline–this summer after dumping Kemba Walker's salary.

McCollum would give the Celtics a capable shot-creator who can get to his spot off the dribble and be a midrange savant. Perhaps Boston even feels he could run the point. Still, new head coach Ime Udoka would likely have his hands full trying to organize rotations.

McCollum should be a fairly popular target. Time will tell whether the Celtics show legitimate interest.
