To say that Gordon Hayward’s first game as a Boston Celtic was a disappointing one would be a massive understatement. The much-anticipated debut of Hayward for the Celtics turned into a horror show after the forward went down with a gruesome ankle injury that took him out of the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers and put his availability for the rest of the season in jeopardy.

That said, Hayward appears to be in good spirits. Speaking to a camera while lying on a hospital bed, Gordon thanked everyone who prayed and offered support for him during this hard time in his life. The video was posted on the Celtics’ Twitter account and was played at TD Garden before a loud, cheering crowd on Wednesday, according to Jimmy Golen of The Associated Press via NBA.com.

“What's up, everybody? Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who's had me in their thoughts and prayers. I'm going to be all right. It's hurting me that I can't be there for the home opener. I want nothing more than to be with my teammates and walk out on that floor tonight. But I'll be supporting you guys from here, and wishing you the best of luck.”

Hayward is likely done for the season, though Boston has yet to give an official timetable for his recovery from a dislocated left ankle and broken tibia.
