Boston Celtics star point guard Kyrie Irving often gives his game-worn shoes to fans as he's leaving the stadium he's playing in.
Thursday night in Oklahoma City, Irving spotted a fan who was in an Uncle Drew getup, and the five-time All-Star knew right away that was the fan who was going to walk away with his shoes.
“Uncle Drew” the movie came out over the summer and it was a hit nationwide. What started as a simple Sprite commercial turned into a national phenomenon for Kyrie Irving. It just shows how popular he has become since being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft out of Duke.
The Celtics came back and defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday night on the road, winning by a final score of 101-95. Irving finished with 15 points while shooting 6-of-13 from the field, 2-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 1-of-4 from the free-throw line. He played 34 minutes.
Boston is now 3-2 on the season. Kyrie Irving entered Thursday evening averaging 16.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists. His shooting has been subpar, but Irving is still knocking off the rust. After all, the point guard didn't play during the 2018 playoffs after undergoing season-ending knee surgery in April. Irving also had a second procedure to remove screws which were placed in his knee from the fractured kneecap he suffered in the 2015 NBA Finals.
