The Los Angeles Chargers face off with the New England Patriots on Sunday, but there is already some talk about what would happen next weekend if the Chargers were to win, and the Indianapolis Colts were to beat the Kansas City Chiefs.
If that scenario were to play out that would mean the Los Angeles Chargers would host the AFC championship game and according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the NFL could decide to move the game to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
“Sources said that last month there were internal discussions about possibly playing Sunday night and Monday night championship games in the event both the Rams and Chargers hosted conference-title games, with both games being played at the Rams' Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It was not considered feasible for the L.A. Coliseum to host both championship games on the same Sunday – in double-header fashion – I'm told, but moving the AFC Championship Game out of 30,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park is something many within the NFL offices would support.”
It makes sense that the NFL would want the AFC Championship played in a bigger stadium, but this is the situation that the NFL has put themselves in with them letting the Chargers play in a 30,000 seat stadium.
The Chargers already have a hard time getting a home field advantage and moving them out of their “home” stadium would probably make it even worse. Of course, a lot has to happen for this to be even in play but it's a storyline to watch if the cards fall right.
