The NFL debut of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert came as quite a surprise. The team nearly upset the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite a promising performance, it appears this has not changed head coach Anthony Lynn's views of him and Tyrod Taylor.

Lynn offered up some clarity under center by naming Tyrod Taylor as the starter barring any health issues, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport:

The move caught many off guard considering how well the rookie played after throwing for 311 yards and scoring two touchdowns against the reigning Super bowl champs. Although a crucial interception ultimately came back to haunt the Chargers, they could not have asked for a better performance under the last-minute circumstances.

It is safe to say that Lynn's update on the quarterback situation is not sitting well with fans ready to usher in the Herbert era under center. There had already been plenty of speculation regarding how long it would take for Lynn to make the switch heading into the 2020 NFL season and Taylor's underwhelming performance in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals have only added fuel to the fire.

Regardless, it is clear that Lynn and the coaching staff are adamant about taking their time with Herbert's development as long as Taylor is healthy enough to play. The latter had been dealing with a rib issue leading up to Week 2. The severity of his injury will determine whether or not Herbert gets the starting nod in Week 3 for the Chargers versus the Carolina Panthers.
