The Los Angeles Chargers have their quarterback of the future in Justin Herbert.

The Chargers selected the University of Oregon QB with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. Herbert luckily fell into their lap after the Miami Dolphins elected to draft quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall selection.

Anthony Lynn, the head coach of the Chargers, expressed why the franchise believes in Herbert — because of his boldness.

Via Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated:

“He would lay it on the line for his teammates,” Lynn said. “He took off and, I mean, he didn’t dodge or lay down—now, I’m gonna say to him, Get your ass down—but he lowers his shoulder, runs through the guy and falls in the end zone. And I thought, That’s a quarterback that’s putting it on the line for his team. They needed that touchdown, he got that touchdown. I started to see stuff like that, I thought, This guy, he’s made of the right stuff.”

Herbert quickly became one of the hottest prospects entering the 2020 NFL Draft. His combine workout led to teams becoming enamored with him, including the likes of the Chargers, Dolphins and New England Patriots.

The Chargers are moving forward with the 6-foot-6, 236-pound prospect with the utmost confidence. Los Angeles decided to move in a different direction this offseason when they allowed longtime franchise QB, Philip Rivers, to walk in free agency after 16 seasons with the organization.

For the time being, veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor enters as the starting quarterback. However, Herbert will have every opportunity to wrestle the job away from Taylor in the future.
