Los Angeles Chargers center Mike Pouncey saw his 2019 NFL campaign end after just five games due to a neck injury, an injury that could potentially threaten his career.

Pouncey had surgery to repair the issue and has still not been given medical clearance, but he still plans to play in 2020.

On Wednesday, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said that the team expects Pouncey to be cleared before any football activities begin, and that if he isn't, the club has “other options,” according to Jeff Miller of The Los Angeles Times.

Pouncey, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round (15th pick overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

The 30-year-old immediately became the Dolphins' starting center during his rookie campaign and spent the first seven years of his career in South Beach, making three straight Pro Bowl appearances between 2013 and 2015.

Pouncey also earned a five-year, $52 million contract extension with Miami in 2015, but in 2016, a hip injury limited the Bartow, Fl. native to just five games.

He was ultimately cut by the Dolphins in March 2018 after he asked the team to release him.

That offseason, Pouncey signed a two-year, $15 million deal with Los Angeles and had a superb debut season with the squad, making the Pro Bowl in 2018.

The Chargers proceeded to sign Pouncey to a one-year extension this past September.

Los Angeles was one of the NFL's most disappointing teams in 2019, winning just five games and missing the playoffs in spite of entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations.
