Unfortunately for safety Derwin James and the Los Angeles Chargers, it has become rinse and repeat for the veteran defensive back on the injury front throughout his NFL playing career.

Having recently suffering a serious lower-leg injury at practice, it remained to be seen as to how long the Chargers would be without James to begin the upcoming 2020 NFL campaign. However, the news has not come back positively. It appears Derwin James will more than likely miss the entire season.

According to a Monday evening report from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Derwin James' latest setback will require knee surgery in order to repair the damage.

Considered by some to be one of the better safeties in the entire NFL when healthy, the 24-year-old Derwin James has really played only one full season of professional football. As a rookie back in 2018, he appeared in all 16 regular season games for the Chargers, who originally selected him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State.

Over that same span, Derwin James tallied 105 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and 13 pass defenses. Unfortunately, things would take a turn for the worst: James then appeared in just five regular season games for the struggling Chargers last season due to injury.

With the team currently undergoing a massive roster revamp, the loss of James will surely hurt the Chargers' already slim chances of competing at a high level in 2020. Speculation about the Chargers signing Earl Thomas, recently released by the Baltimore Ravens, is sure to increase as a result of this development.
