The Los Angeles Chargers have high expectations going into the 2019 NFL season. Unfortunately, it appears they will have to begin their campaign without safety Derwin James.

James was unable to practice and was instead wearing a walking boot on his right leg. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, he is expected to miss a good chunk of time to start the season with an unknown injury.

The Chargers suffered a tough loss yesterday in practice. Sources say star safety Derwin James will be out a significant amount of time, but how much is still undetermined, as of now. He injured his foot yesterday and was spotted in a boot today.

The prospect of James having to delay his start to the season undoubtedly deals a crushing blow to the Chargers' defense. The former 17th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft established himself as one of the most promising, young players in the league after finishing the 2018 campaign with 105 tackles, three interceptions, and 3.5 sacks en route to First-Team All-Pro honors.

James is not the only one currently dealing with an injury. The Chargers revealed that wide receiver Keenan Allen is also slated to miss the rest of the preseason with an ankle injury. Meanwhile, the lingering holdout of running back Melvin Gordon raises even more concern about the team's star power to start the year.

Given the Chargers' high expectations, it is safe to assume that they will be looking to take a cautious approach with James and Allen. Ensuring their health for a potential playoff run will likely be a top priority when it comes to a timetable for their return.
