It goes without saying that the Los Angeles Chargers have dealt with their fair share of injuries to their secondary this offseason. Fortunately, they have managed to find a viable option in safety Derwin James.

James has been making a solid case for himself throughout the offseason. It appears to have paid off after defensive coordinator Gus Bradley designated him the starter going into the 2018 NFL season, according to Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times.

Chargers DC Gus Bradley confirmed No. 17 overall pick Derwin James will be a Week 1 starter.

Los Angeles selected James with the 17th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Part of the reason was his ability to play multiple positions on the field. However, Bradley understands that the rookie will still endure his fair share of growing pains.

“There is going to be a learning curve,” Bradley said. “I think he’ll go out and make a mistake here and there, but he’ll also make some splash plays.”

James has shown plenty of promise in the preseason thus far. He was able to find his footing last week against the New Orleans Saints when he picked off quarterback Drew Brees on their first possession.

Even with the injury issues this preseason, the Chargers are still expected to have one of the most talented secondary groups in the league thanks to their tremendous depth. James will certainly have his work cut out for him in Week 1 against the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs.
